Always happy to help, heart-warming smiles and friendly conversations are often unique characteristics of small businesses. These valuable traits cost nothing but add to the vibrant community spirit of Frankfurt’s various neighbourhoods. These small wonders have helped me settle in Frankfurt, and really feel at home. As well as supporting your local economy, shopping at small businesses supports other people’s dreams, and there’s just something pleasant about that. Here are a few small businesses in Frankfurt that I have shopped at myself. I’m happy to extend the list, so do let me know if there’s anywhere else worth exploring.

Sustainable products – Swahali Secrets

Swahali Secrets sells a small collection of hand-made items intended to prevent waste. I love the personal touch of the owner’s story, which goes hand-in-hand with the authenticity of this brand. If you want to make a positive contribution to the environment, it’s worth taking a look at the Swahili Secrets sustainable products. I myself have the beeswax wraps and re-usable sponges.

Stationery and gifts – Schmidt’s Papeterie

The staff at Schmidt’s Papeterie are more than happy to help you find what you need. As well as selling stationery (which I love), they sell small gifts ranging from candle holders to ceramics. You can follow them on Instagram, but I’d say you need to go into the shop for the full experience of this small business in Frankfurt.

Art – Studio Hillbilly

Local print designer Studio Hillbilly celebrates women through art. I fell in love with the Curvy Edition and have the ‘fly big’ print up in my home. If you also have a weakness for well presented items, Studio Hillbilly’s prints are stamped and signed by hand.

Home, cosmetics, flowers – Liebesdienste

Liebesdienste sells a range of Scandinavian style products including home furnishings, accessories, cosmetics and condiments. This shop is so aesthetically pleasing that sometimes I go in just to look around! But I’ve bought a few things too, and I have never been disappointed. They even sell fresh flowers, adding that touch of nature to your home.
