5 things to do along the River Main

If there’s one thing you can’t miss in Frankfurt, it’s the rippling water that skips along the body of the River Main, hence the name Frankfurt am Main. It’s the longest river that is located entirely in Germany and is a great place for locals and tourists to enjoy their spare time. If you fancy a bit more than just a stroll a long the river, check out my 5 recommendations below!

1. Table tennis

I bet you weren’t expecting this one!? If you’re up for some a bit of table tennis with the spectacular view of the Main, then head down to the east end of the river. The table is located just in front of Spielplatz an der Weseler Werft, so it’s very easy to get to. Just bring a bat and ball, and you’re good to go!

2. Stand up paddling

Anyone who has walked along the River Main, would have seen people standing on paddle boards and rowing themselves down the river – Stand up paddling really is a self explanatory term! I was gifted this experience a few years ago, and absolutely loved it. And if it keeps your mind at rest, I didn’t fall in!

3. Offenbach harbour

If you want to stay local but see something outside of Frankfurt, I’d recommend heading down to Offenbach harbour. The walk from Eiserner steg is approx and hour, or half of that if you choose to cycle. You’ll need to stay on the southern riverbank (because that’s where the path is), and once you arrive, there are restaurants and cafes to have a break at before heading back to Frankfurt.

4. Stop for a drink

My two favourite places to enjoy a refreshing beverage on the Main are Oosten and Main Cafe. I’ve actually celebrated my birthday at both of these locations, and was very happy on both occasions 🥳

Oosten roof terrace is popular place for a drink on a sunny day. The restaurant has a glass facade, and they sell food throughout the day. Whether you fancy getting a bit dressed up or a few casual drinks, the view won’t disappoint – promise!

Main Cafe has a chilled pop-up atmosphere, and is located directly on the southern riverbank. There are a few tables and deckchairs, but I’d recommend bringing a blanket because it gets super busy and is very popular on a sunny day. All seating is outside, so if I’m correct, Main Cafe doesn’t open if it’s raining.

5. Museumsuferfest

Events have been few and far between over the last few years, but I am hoping that Museumsuferfest will be able to happen again soon! Usually taking place on the last weekend of August, Frankfurt am Main hosts three days of fun along the River Main, with food from all over the world, music stages, entertainment and more! You can click here for details on dates and times.

Viel Spaß am Main!

  1. When the weather is nice, I can also recommend the Orange Beach Club under the Alte Niederräder Brücke, or the Licht- und Luftbad. The Sommerhofpark is also quite nice. Or going down all the way to Höchst. By bike this is best done on the south side of the river and you can take a ferry in Höchst to get to the other side to visit the old town of Höchst.
